Hwange Thermal Power Station
Overview
Located in the North-Western region of Zimbabwe, Hwange Power Station is the country’s largest coal-fired power plant, with an installed capacity of 920MW. The station comprises four 120MW units and two 220MW units, making it the 14th largest thermal power station in the Southern African region. Conveniently situated next to the Wankie Colliery Open Cast Mine, the power station plays a critical role in Zimbabwe’s energy infrastructure.
Hwange Power Station was constructed in two phases. The first phase saw the commissioning of four 120MW units between 1983 and 1986, while the second phase brought two 220MW units online in 1986 and 1987. Over the years, the station’s equipment has experienced frequent breakdowns due to aging infrastructure, resulting in an average output of 400MW—well below its installed capacity of 920MW.
