Small Thermal Power Stations

Overview

The Harare Power Station is located in the Workington area of the capital, along Coventry Road. Initially developed with three stations, Station 1 was commissioned in 1942 with a capacity of 21 MW but was decommissioned in 1970 due to its increasing uneconomic operation. Station 2, commissioned in 1955 with a capacity of 75 MW, and was later de-rated to 20 MW as a result of the inefficiency of some of its units. It is equipped with nine chain-grate boilers and six turbo-alternators. Station 3, with a capacity of 60 MW, features pulverised fluidised bed boilers and is powered by two large turbo-alternator machines, each capable of generating 30 MW.

Bulawayo Power Station (BPS) was commissioned between 1947 and 1957 as an undertaking by the Municipality of Bulawayo. The station was commissioned with a generation capacity of 120MW. A refurbishment project which was done in 1998 decommissioned 4 x 7.5MW chain grate boilers, thereby diminishing the generation capacity to 90MW.

Munyati Power Station is situated five kilometres off the Harare-Bulawayo Road at the 183-kilometre peg. The Power Station was established in 1938. It is a five-unit coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 100 MW. The plant was completed between 1953 and 1958.

Meanwhile, the small thermal power stations were shut down and placed under care and maintenance while awaiting repurposing. Bulawayo Power Station was shut down on 31 July 2023, Munyati Power Station on 11 August 2023 and Harare Power Station on 31 August 2023.
