Corporate Social Responsibilty and ESG
Overview
Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) places great value on its stakeholders and the communities it serves, embodying its core value of social responsibility. As a committed corporate citizen, ZPC is dedicated to uplifting the welfare of its communities through meaningful initiatives and strategic partnerships.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
ZPC has consistently demonstrated its commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) through various initiatives that benefit the communities in which it operates. These projects align with ZPC’s core values and vision, with a particular focus on empowering Zimbabwe’s youth through education.
Education
In Hwange, ZPC manages three schools: Megawatt Primary School, Gebuza High School, and Ingagula Primary School. These institutions provide high-quality education to not only ZPC employees’ families but also the wider Hwange community. In Munyati, ZPC operates both a primary and secondary school, offering educational opportunities to children of ZPC employees and neighboring communities, ensuring equitable access to quality education.
Through these educational programs, ZPC reaffirms its dedication to community empowerment, fostering growth, and creating opportunities for a brighter and more sustainable future for Zimbabwe.
Health Initiatives
In the healthcare sector, ZPC has made significant contributions, particularly by upgrading the Kariba Municipal Hospital. These improvements included donating linen, electrifying the perimeter fence, and installing a new gate to enhance security and service delivery.
At the Kariba South Power Station (KSPS), ZPC has made strides to address water shortages in staff living areas by drilling four boreholes in the community. Furthermore, ZPC has built a new Dependency Clinic at KSPS to improve access to healthcare services for employees and their families, ensuring better health and well-being.
ZPC has also undertaken impactful community development projects, such as drilling boreholes and electrifying the homes of local chiefs in Hwange, Kariba, and Munyati. These boreholes provide clean water not only for the chiefs but also for surrounding communities, ensuring reliable access to this critical resource.
Infrastructure Development
ZPC has invested in the construction of vital infrastructure, including the Ruia Bridge in Kariba, which has significantly improved access to essential services such as schools and healthcare for local residents. Additionally, ZPC financed the construction of a classroom block at Mahombekombe Secondary School in Kariba, improving educational access for the youth in the region.
Sports Development
ZPC is also deeply invested in the development of sports in the country. It proudly sponsors ZPC Kariba Football Club (FC), contributing to local talent development and promoting teamwork and excellence. ZPC Kariba FC, which started in Division One, achieved promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in 2014, marking its rise among Zimbabwe’s top football clubs.
The club’s achievements have not only boosted local entertainment but have also created employment opportunities for the community and helped scout talent from the region. ZPC also supports another football team, ZPC Hwange FC, based in Hwange. In January 2025, ZPC Hwange FC entered into a partnership with Moors World of Sport (MWOS) FC, combining resources and expertise to strengthen football development in Zimbabwe. This collaboration nurtures grassroots football in Hwange, providing a pathway for young players to advance to the Premier Soccer League.
Youth Empowerment
ZPC is strongly committed to youth empowerment and contributing to the development of Zimbabwe’s workforce. The company offers various programs aimed at equipping the younger generation with essential skills through apprenticeships, graduate trainee programs, and attachment opportunities. These initiatives prepare young individuals for success in their chosen fields, providing them with valuable technical and professional skills.
ZPC offers training at various levels, helping to produce skilled professionals in technical, administrative, and financial sectors. By investing in the future workforce, ZPC continues to drive Zimbabwe’s energy future while making a positive, lasting impact on the communities it serves.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Initiatives
ZPC recognizes the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives in driving sustainable growth, attracting investment, building customer loyalty, and improving financial performance. The company’s commitment to ESG principles is supported by its adherence to Integrated Management Systems (IMS), ensuring a comprehensive approach to sustainability and ethical governance. Through these efforts, ZPC is positioned for long-term success, contributing to both the environment and society while maintaining competitive strength.
Environmental Management System (EMS) 14001:2015
For ZPC, the Environmental Management System (EMS) plays a pivotal role in aligning with the environmental components of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives. The EMS standard emphasizes minimizing the environmental impact of operations and ensuring compliance with relevant environmental regulations, both of which are fundamental principles of ESG.
The EMS enables ZPC to systematically address its environmental footprint through initiatives aimed at reducing emissions, improving waste management practices, and enhancing energy efficiency. By prioritizing sustainability in power generation, ZPC is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.
Occupational Health Safety Management System (OHSMS) ISO 45001:2018
At ZPC, the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) provides a structured framework to enhance employee safety, minimize workplace risks, and create safer working conditions. This standard is integral to addressing the social component of ESG by prioritizing the health, well-being, and safety of the workforce.
By promoting a culture of safety, ZPC not only boosts employee morale and productivity but also mitigates the risk of accidents and health-related issues. This unwavering commitment to the workforce strengthens ZPC’s social responsibility efforts and contributes to the long-term sustainability of its operations.
Quality Management System (QMS) 9001:2015
The implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS) at ZPC ensures that the organization consistently provides products and services that meet both customer expectations and regulatory requirements. This standard directly supports the governance aspect of ESG by improving organizational processes, transparency, and fostering trust among stakeholders.
Through the QMS, ZPC establishes robust quality control procedures that ensure efficient power generation operations while adhering to the highest standards. This enhances governance by promoting transparency, accountability, and consistency, all of which are essential for building and maintaining stakeholder trust.
ESG Reporting
In November 2024, ZPC launched ESG reporting as part of its commitment to aligning its operations with global sustainability standards, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1). ESG reporting entails the disclosure of performance across environmental, social, and governance metrics, playing a crucial role in fostering transparency and building trust with key stakeholders, such as regulators, investors, and the public.
